As we all know, Islam is the religion of ease and provide altertaive methods to do things. According to the ‘Ulama (Islamic Scholars), if you have missed performing Aqeeqa on the 7th day, is it no longer obligatory but rather a sunnah (voluntary). However, Aqeeqa is referred to as a pledge in the hadith mentioned before. Therefore, it is highly recommended to perform Aqeeqa even if the 7th day has passed. Afterall, a pledge to Allah must be honored before the pledge to people. Additionally, most of the scholars’ advice to perform Aqeeqa on either 7th, 14th or 21st day in the respective order. If all of the mentioned dates have passed, any date after that is deemed satisfactory.
How to calculate the 7th day?
Calculating the 7th day is actually very simple and easy. There are 3 methods that can be used. The only things that need to be taken into cosideration is the ‘time of birth’. If the baby was born before maghrib, that day (the date of birth) will be included while counting, BUT if the baby was born after Maghrib, that day (the date of birth) will not be included while counting days. It is due to the fact that, in Islamic calendar, the day begins with maghrib prayer. Hence, if the baby was born just before maghrib, he/she will be 1 day old after maghrib. There are mainly 2 methods that can be used to calculate Aqeeqa Date.
  1. Date Based Calculation
For this calculation, only the date and time of birth are required. For example, Aisha and Ahmed both born on 1st May 2022, have two different Aqeeqa Dates because of the time of birth.
Aqeeqa Date for Aisha (born at 5pm) Aqeeqa Date for Ahmed (born at 7pm)
01.05.2022 (born before maghrib) = Day 1 01.05.2022 (born after maghrib) = Day 0
01.05.2022 to 02.05.2022 = Day 2 01.05.2022 to 02.05.2022 = Day 1
02.05.2022 to 03.05.2022 = Day 3 02.05.2022 to 03.05.2022 = Day 2
03.05.2022 to 04.05.2022 = Day 4 03.05.2022 to 04.05.2022 = Day 3
04.05.2022 to 05.05.2022 = Day 5 04.05.2022 to 05.05.2022 = Day 4
05.05.2022 to 06.05.2022 = Day 6 05.05.2022 to 06.05.2022 = Day 5
06.05.2022 to 07.05.2022 = Day 7 06.05.2022 to 07.05.2022 = Day 6
07.05.2022 to 08.05.2022 = Day 8 07.05.2022 to 08.05.2022 = Day 7
  1. Weekly Calculation
For weekly calculation, only week day on which the baby was born is considered. If the baby was born on a Friday, the possible Aqeeqa Dates are:
  • Born After Maghrib: the Aqeeqa Day (7th day) will be Friday of the next week
  • Born Before Maghrib: the 7th day will be the day before Friday of the next week, which is (next) Thursday.
Use the table below for a simpler method.
BORN ON BEFORE MAGHRIB AFTER MAGHRIB
Friday Thursday Friday
Saturday Friday Saturday
Sunday Saturday Sunday
Monday Sunday Monday
Tuesday Monday Tuesday
Wednesday Tuesday Wednesday
Thursday Wednesday Thursday
